Cervical collars and braces in athletic brachial plexus injury and excessive cervical motion prevention: a review of the literature.

چکیده
A review of the literature was conducted to find publications relating to neck collars / rolls and prevention of sports injury, particularly burners and other cervical spine injuries, as well as in preventing excessive motion of the cervical spine. MEDLINE (1970-2005), Cinahl (1982-2005), Alt Health Watch (1990-2005), AMED (1995-2005), and the Index to Chiropractic Literature (1985-2005) databases were searched. To date there has been very little documented study into the ability of cervical collars/neck rolls to prevent excessive motion of the cervical spine or to prevent injury. Neck rolls/braces are capable of limiting cervical hyperextension under laboratory conditions, but the same can not be said for their ability to limit lateral flexion. Only one empirical study could be identified that looked at the ability of a collar to prevent burners and other neck injuries in athletes. Further laboratory and on-field studies are clearly needed.

Effect of cervical collars on intracranial pressure in patients with head neurotrauma
Trauma patients are at high risk of cervical and associated injuries. The standard protocol includes immobilization of the cervical spine in a polytrauma as it will help to prevent spinal injuries in the prehospital settings. Hard cervical collar (or alternatives) is routinely used until the cervical spine clearance is obtained . In patients with traumatic brain injury avoiding any kind of mane...
متن کاملCervical Spine Alignment During On-Field Management of Potential Catastrophic Spine Injuries
CONTEXT When cervical spine injuries are suspected, the cervical spine should be immobilized in a neutral position and neck motion controlled in preparation for transport to an emergency facility. Protocols for emergency transport utilizing common devices (cervical collars) and methods (transfer techniques) during these procedures are not entirely evidence based. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION The medi...
متن کاملEtiology, treatment, and prevention of athletic "stingers".
Stingers or burners are common in athletes, especially football players. They represent a traction, compression, or direct blow to the upper roots of the brachial plexus. They are usually transient and resolve quickly. Cervical canal stenosis with concurrent degenerative disc disease may predispose an athlete to this injury. Return-to-play criteria are largely based on the number of previous ep...
متن کاملTraumatic Cervical Nerve Root Avulsion with Pseudomeningocele Formation
Cervical nerve root avulsion is a well-documented result of motor vehicle collision (MVC), especially when occurring at high velocities. These avulsions are commonly traction injuries of nerve roots that may be accompanied by a tear in the meninges through the vertebral foramina with associated collections of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), thereby resulting in a pseudomeningocele. We present a case...
متن کاملThe Effect of Soft and Rigid Cervical Collars on Head and Neck Immobilization in Healthy Subjects
STUDY DESIGN Whiplash injury is a prevalent and often destructive injury of the cervical column, which can lead to serious neck pain. Many approaches have been suggested for the treatment of whiplash injury, including anti-inflammatory drugs, manipulation, supervised exercise, and cervical collars. Cervical collars are generally divided into two groups: soft and rigid collars. PURPOSE The pre...
